Gli scavi 1940-50 nella Caverna delle Arene Candide (Finale Lígure)
vennero condotti con metodo multidisciplinare, sicuramente d'avanguardia
per l'epoca. Basti pensare che l'intero deposito fu setacciato e vennero
raccolti sistematicamente i reperti biologici, tra cui oltre 30 chilogrammi
di frustoli di carbone. Questi ultimi hanno consentito l'esecuzione di una
cinquantina di datazioni radiocarboniche su campioni raccolti prima della
invenzione del metodo.
Dopo la pubblicazione dei due magistrali lavori di L. Bernabò Brea
(1946-1956), molti aspetti della serie olocenica rimasero inediti.
Questo volume si propone di riprendere lo studio da dove è stato interrotto;
contiene 23 relazioni in inglese con riassunto in italiano.
During the years 1940-42 and 1948-50, Luigi Bernabò Brea and Luigi
Cardini carried out a very high standard stratigraphic excavation in the
cave of Arene Candide (Liguria, Italy). They planned the research using a
multidisciplinary approach - certainly avant garde, for the time. They employed
dry sieving for the systematic recovery of several classes of evidence. Attention
was paid to bioarchaeological remains, so that the complete faunal assemblages
was recovered, as well as micromammals, landsnails, marine molluscs and over
30 kg of charcoal fragments. The latter allowed about fifty radiocarbon dates
using samples collected before the invention of the method.
The pottery material were promptly published by L. Bernabò Brea (1946,
1956), however most of the other aspects of the Holocene sequence remained
unpublished.
This volume picks up the story where it was interrupted, by means of 23 papers,
published in English, with summary in Italian.
